Brewer fined for polluting drinking water aquifer

Brewer Whitbread was fined £8,000 after sewage from an Oxfordshire pub polluted a drinking water aquifer. A routine sampling visit by the Agency revealed that the a hatch giving access to the pub's sewage treatment plant was overgrown and inaccessible. Two months later the Agency gained access and found the plant's effluent was unsatisfactory, containing ammonia and a high biochemical oxygen demand. The effluent was being discharged to a high quality chalk aquifer. The company was fined and ordered to pay costs of £743 by Oxford magistrates on 11 October.
