EC sludge proposals softened but metals threat remains
Proposals by the European Commission to revise the 1986 EC Directive on use of sewage sludge in agriculture have been altered following consultation with Member States. Deadlines for meeting proposed limits on metals have been relaxed, but the threat of tighter standards in the future remains. The Department of the Environment, Transport and the Regions (DETR) says that the proposals would cut sludge spreading on farms and double the amount of sludge incinerated in the UK.
