Rail firms fined £250,000 for groundwater pollution

Railtrack and Silverlink Train Services were both fined £125,000 in February after pleading guilty to polluting groundwater with over 200,000 litres of oil. The incident resulted from extraordinarily lax management which allowed an underground oil leak to persist for more than nine months. The clean-up costs are likely to exceed £1 million.
