Organic farmers face battle to stay GM-free

Organic farmers may have to live with "adventitious contamination" from genetically modified (GM) crops just as they do with contamination from conventional crops, Food Safety Minister Baroness Hayman hinted to the House of Commons Agriculture Committee in January. She refused to say whether a new report claiming risks of contamination from three of the five GM crops planned for commercial planting in the UK would affect plans by the Ministry of Agriculture (MAFF) to put industry guidelines for growing GM crops on a statutory footing.
