Leaking fuel tank and bund set to cost company £1 million

Cellophane manufacturer UCB has been fined £30,000 for breaches of an integrated pollution control (IPC) authorisation - including serious shortcomings in containment - which led to a major leak of gas oil. The company faces total costs of about £1 million to clean up the contamination on its site in Bridgwater, Somerset. The case has also shown that the Environment Agency's "Hall of Shame" can be a double-edged sword which a defendant may exploit to minimise the size of its legal penalties.
