Water reuse scheme sets precedent for new sewage discharges

Plans by Essex and Suffolk Water to boost its water resources by reusing treated sewage effluent were given the green light by the Environment Agency in April. The scheme sets a precedent for ultra-violet (UV) disinfection of new sewage discharges to rivers. The company's experience has also shed light on the public acceptability of effluent reuse schemes.
