Sentencing for waste disposal offences

The courts have been under mounting pressure in recent years to impose stiffer sentences for environmental offences. Most such offences are punished by fines, but custodial sentences, especially in the waste disposal field, are no longer exceptional. A recent decision of the Court of Appeal has provided guidance on when a prison sentence is not appropriate.
