Two steps forward on air quality, one step back on CO2, says Auto-Oil

Future EC air quality legislation should focus on all pollution sources and not just road traffic, according to a review of the EC's Auto-Oil II programme. 1 Local pollution levels are predicted to fall dramatically as a result of measures introduced under Auto-Oil I, but particulate pollution will remain a "significant problem" and carbon dioxide emissions will continue to rise — at least for the next few years. Meanwhile, a number of respondents to the European Commission's consultation on the sulphur content of fuels predict that tightening the specifications will lead to a net increase in CO2 emissions.
