Long-term signals sought from transport taxes
The House of Commons Environmental Audit Committee heard conflicting evidence about the effectiveness of the now abandoned fuel duty escalator when it questioned representatives from industry and environmental and motoring groups in January. Both the current and previous administrations came under fire for failing adequately to research the environmental impacts of transport taxation, and the Committee was told that a long-term strategy - incorporating taxation - is needed if the Government wants to see a shift to more sustainable road transport.
