Ministers disregard advice in new controls on rendering wastes

Animal rendering businesses would no longer be permitted to spread untreated effluent on land under draft legislation issued for consultation by the Ministry of Agriculture (MAFF) in January. 1 The proposals follow scientific advice presented in 1998 that the practice posed unacceptable BSE risks - but run against advice that even treated effluent may contain traces of infectivity.
