Firm fined for pollution
Opencast mining firm Coal Contractors 2000 was fined £1,500 at Ayr Sheriff Court on 4 December after admitting polluting an Ayrshire stream with silt. A discharge of run-off from the company's Broomhill site in March last year breached both suspended solids and pH conditions in its discharge consent. The discharge was too acid due to an overdose of coagulant.
