EU proposals overhaul GMO food/feed consents and labelling

European Commissioners agreed proposals for two Regulations on genetically modified organisms (GMOs) at an acrimonious meeting in July. One will set up a more centralised system for authorising and labelling GM food and animal feed, handing a key role to the planned European Food Authority.1 The second, on traceability and labelling, aims to track the path of GMOs from their origins to the consumer.2 The proposals court controversy from all sides because they significantly extend legal control over GM products while creating a crucial loophole for the "adventitious" presence of unauthorised GMOs.
