Lords cross swords with Meacher over radioactive waste

The Government was accused of producing a "vacuous" consultation paper on radioactive waste management during an unusually tetchy hearing by the House of Lords Select Committee on Science and Technology on 23 October. Environment Minister Michael Meacher disclosed that long-term surface storage of radioactive wastes - favoured by leading environmental groups - is even less likely to be proposed by the Government following the terrorist attacks on the USA.
