Energy policy at the crossroads
All power generating plant is vulnerable to unplanned outages. Seen in that light, the lightning strike which crippled one of the UK's two offshore wind turbines off the Northumberland coast (see front cover picture) is just one of those things. But timing is important in politics and policy-making. Conservatives in the energy industry, who still regard new renewable energy technologies as unreliable and technically unproven, will not have been slow to notice that the incident occurred as the Prime Minister was considering the final draft of the Government's energy review.
