Whitehall wrangle over national debate on GM crops

Crucial decisions about the run-up to the possible commercialisation of genetically modified crops will be taken by the Government within the next few weeks, a parliamentary inquiry was told in April. The hearing pointed to a Whitehall dispute about whether an innovative public debate on the issue should be held at all - and there were also hints that any such debate would not run long enough to take account of next summer's initial results from the current programme of GM crop trials.
