Meacher grilled over fridge debacle

The 30-month sequence of events which led to the UK's fridge mountain problem was set out by Environment Minister Michael Meacher at a parliamentary inquiry on 15 April. MPs suggested that prolonged "nitpicking" by Environment Department officials over whether EU legislation required recovery of ozone-depleting chemicals from fridge foams was to blame - but Mr Meacher countered that it was Whitehall opposition to "gold-plating" of EU legislation that lay at the root of the problem.
