EU liability proposals will affect "very few" cases in UK, says DEFRA

The burdens imposed by the proposed EU Directive on liability for environmental damage will be much less than suggested by industry, the Government has tacitly suggested in its first detailed statement on the proposal. It believes that the Directive will apply to "very few" cases of environmental damage in the UK - although it may spur reductions in pollution incidents indirectly through tighter insurance conditions.
