Bathing water spotlight shifts from water industry to farmers

A dramatic shift in costs from the water industry to the agricultural sector is likely as the result of a forthcoming revision of the EU Directive on bathing water quality. Research for the Environment Department has estimated that costs to agriculture could reach £7 billion over 25 years if high standards of water quality are pursued - significantly less than the benefits perceived by the public in a second study.1
