Energy for a brave new world

An energy analyst who worked for the oil industry during the oil crises of the 1970s told a conference in October that the most difficult thing for the industry's leaders had been to adapt their mindsets to the new geopolitical realities of that time (see p 11 ). His recollection is worth bearing in mind as the Government prepares its energy White Paper (see pp 26-30 ). Preoccupied though they may be with devising the latest bail-out for an uneconomic nuclear industry, Ministers cannot afford to ignore the new reality fashioned by international events over the past year which has seen concerns about energy security bulk larger than they have done for decades - and as they will go on doing.
