New groundwater rules may block 20% of biodegradable waste landfills
A controversial policy to improve protection of groundwater against pollution from landfills is to be introduced by the Environment Agency before the end of the year. Around 20% of the landfills for biodegradable wastes proposed recently in England and Wales would have been refused a licence under the new policy, with higher proportions facing refusal in some regions.
