Commission kicks off work on marine conservation strategy

The first step towards an EU marine conservation strategy was taken by the European Commission in October. Fourteen objectives and a raft of supporting measures were proposed in a paper which could see the EU extending its influence on oil and radioactive discharges as well as a host of business activities through a new ecosystem-based approach to protection of the seas.1
