UK to push for less stringent changes to EU bathing water rules

The Government has signalled its intention to seek major changes to the European Commission's proposals to revise the 1976 EU Directive on bathing water quality. Its goal is to reduce the potential economic impact on farmers - but its position is based on shaky estimates of the costs of controls on diffuse agricultural pollution and an apparent desire to delay them until required by other EU water legislation.
