Environmental implications of EC rules on fish, shellfish

Regulations implementing two EC Directives on the production and marketing of shellfish and fish products have been brought into force throughout Britain.1 Although intended to protect consumers, the EC rules may have environmental implications if shellfish producers demand a clean-up of sewage-contaminated waters, and as standards are set for chemical contaminants in fish products.
