'Widespread' eutrophication in Northern Ireland to trigger more NVZs

All or most of Northern Ireland may have to be designated as an area in which controls on nitrate leaching from farms will need to be applied, according to a scientific assessment commissioned by the Province's administration.1 That conclusion was informed by a recent European Court of Justice (ECJ) judgement which may have significant implications for the way in which the 1991 EU Directive on nitrate from agriculture is applied in the rest of the UK.
