DEFRA gets wake-up call over water framework Directive

The Government has been told that it needs to act with "far greater urgency" in implementing the EU water framework Directive. A report by the House of Commons Environment Committee has recommended that it set up a scientific group to provide better estimates of the improvements in water quality which will be needed to comply with the Directive, and swiftly make institutional changes and improved arrangements for consulting stakeholders on the implementation process.1
