Finance Ministers break deadlock on EU energy tax framework

Long-running efforts to develop a common framework for energy taxation in the EU came to a head in late March, when Finance Ministers reached political agreement on a proposed Directive. The framework, which contains numerous derogations and transition periods and will lead to almost no near-term increases in energy taxes, was described as "deplorable" by environmental groups.
