One year ago, ENDS launched its first Sustainable Business report, an attempt to quantify the state of UK business performance across a range of environmental and social issues. We used a set of 15 indicators to do this, from business energy intensity to levels of corporate reporting.

It was an inopportune time to do so. The recession’s impact on businesses performance was clear to anyone opening the report; every indicator on carbon emissions had a red warning traffic light beside it and performance was only getting worse. That data made it difficult to paint an optimistic narrative for the future or provide encouragement to firms looking to learn how they could improve.

So what has changed over the past year? Can the 2012 report have a brighter narrative and point to businesses turning the corner?
