Tyre industry asks DTI for statutory recovery obligation

The tyre industry has put the Department of Trade and Industry on the spot by pressing it to abandon its proposals to use voluntary measures to comply with the ban on landfilling of tyres which takes full effect in 2006. Concerned about "free riders", the industry now wants producers to be given a statutory duty to recover tyres by acquiring "used tyre certificates" from reprocessors - raising the prospect of a windfall for cement kilns and landfills which use tyres for engineering.
