Raising the hurdle for crop biotechnology

For the past few years, biotechnology businesses which had developed genetically modified herbicide-tolerant crops have claimed that they would offer significant benefits to biodiversity. By making possible fewer herbicide sprays, the use of smaller volumes of active ingredients and greater flexibility for farmers in spraying regimes, the crops would, it was argued, allow weeds and the insects and birds which depend on them to flourish more than under conventional cropping.
