DoE consults on "essential" uses of ozone depleters

Businesses still using CFCs, carbon tetrachloride or 1,1,1-trichloroethane have been invited by a Department of the Environment (DoE) consultation paper to submit bids to nominate them as "essential" uses.1 But applicants will have to provide persuasive evidence to have any chance of using new production of these chemicals beyond the phase-out dates laid down by the global Montreal Protocol and by EC law.
