Land use planning measures proposed to cut traffic and CO2

Planning guidelines to encourage transport-efficient land uses have been issued for consultation by the Department of the Environment (DoE)1. Described by conservationists as a landmark in planning policy, the new guidance would create a presumption in favour of development within existing urban areas and, along with other measures to discourage trips by car, could reduce road transport emissions by 10-15% over 25 years.
