Lack of outlets frustrates plastic bottle recycling RCEP's incineration report turns the heat up on landfills
The quantity of plastic bottles recycled in Europe is expected to double in 1993, according to the Association of Plastics Manufacturers Association (APME). But an excess of collected waste over demand is hampering growth, and has just resulted in a halving of the price paid in the UK for mixed plastics wastes.Supporters of incineration have received a welcome gift from the Royal Commission on Environmental Pollution (RCEP).1 Its new report on incineration makes several recommendations intended to encourage a new generation of large waste-to-energy plants in the UK. But for landfill operators the RCEP's advocacy of a landfill levy, as well as its important conclusion that incineration is preferable to landfill when their greenhouse gas releases are compared, will have provided no cause for celebration.
