Electronics giants want take-back schemes confined to own products

A group of leading electronic appliance manufacturers was due to meet Industry Minister Mike O'Brien in late November to urge him to ensure that the forthcoming regulations on waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) will allow manufacturers to pursue take-back strategies for old appliances based on "individual producer responsibility" (IPR). The group reckons that IPR - which would limit manufacturers' obligations to their own products - would slash the costs of compliance.
