Audit points to CFCs losses from fridges prior to recycling

An Environment Agency audit of fridge recycling plants indicates that a third of the CFCs and other ozone-depleting substances (ODSs) in old fridges are escaping to atmosphere before they reach the plants - largely through accidental damage during transportation or leakage during use and storage. The Agency found an apparently wide range in site recovery rates for ODSs, but has yet to establish the extent to which this is due to recovery performance, record keeping or feedstock condition.
