First water protection zone sought to prevent chemical spills

The National Rivers Authority (NRA) has announced plans to create the UK's first statutory water protection zone to help safeguard the river Dee, in north Wales, from pollution accidents. The scheme would require companies in the Wrexham and Chester area to spend at least £4 million on precautions to prevent spillages which could put major drinking water supplies at risk.
