Farmers can ‘dramatically reverse bird declines’ with right policies

Dramatic declines in farmland birds over the past 40 years could be reversed if the right policies are introduced after Brexit, the government claims

Bird numbers more than doubled on farms managing their land in an environmentally-friendly way, according to research by the RSPB.  

The study, which was funded by Natural England and DEFRA, involved more than 60 farms under Higher Level Stewardship (HLS) schemes in three English regions between 2008 and 2014. HLS is the more advanced of two standards farmers can work on to earn extra payments under the EU’s Common Agricultural Policy.
