Farmers and landowners will receive subsidies based on enhancing the environment and investing in sustainable food production rather than the amount of land they farm under DEFRA’s new plans.

The plans, published for consultation on 27 February, take the form of an agricultural command paper and set out DEFRA’s “once-in-a-generation opportunity to shape the future of English farming and the environment”.
