Tonnes of gold wasted in end-of-life vehicles, finds study

Substantial quantities of rare metals in scrap vehicles are being lost, an EU-funded study has found

Some 20 tonnes of gold is lost each year from vehicles being scrapped in Europe, with amounts of rarer metals being wasted rising rapidly.

The vast amount – around one ten-thousandth of all the gold ever mined – was identified in a study presented to the International Energy Agency on 8 March by Maria Ljunggren Söderman, a researcher at Chalmers University of Technology in Gothenburg, Sweden.
