Coffey demands explanation from councils performing poorly on recycling

Letters have come to light which show the government demanding an explanation from councils on their low recycling rates

Waste and resources minister Thérèse Coffey wrote to 34 councils last year expressing concern at their low recycling rates and asking what challenges they were facing, it has emerged.

The letters, to all local authorities in England that recorded household recycling rates below 30%, were sent in July last year.
