Is less packaging recycled than official figures show?

Figures show a year-on-year rise in packaging recycling but the latest rate is down on 2013 and some believe more packaging is being produced than officially acknowledged. Conor McGlone investigates

The latest official recycling figures for the UK show an increase in the proportion of packaging waste that is recycled – up from  64.7% in 2015 to 71.4% in 2016. In a statistical release, published in February, DEFRA notes that this already exceeds the EU target to recycle or recover at least 60% of packaging waste.
