The communities secretary has blocked plans to extract coal from a site near Druridge Bay in north east England, in what campaigners say is the first time the government has based a planning decision on climate change

Plans to extract coal on a new site in Northumberland have been refused by the government after it ruled that it would have undermined its attempts to combat climate change.

The decision has been described as "perverse" by Banks Mining, the company behind the plans.
