The government has announced its intention to introduce a deposit return scheme (DRS) to address the problem of single-use drinks containers ending up in landfill or being littered to the environment.

The initiative is seen as a response to public concerns over the growing problem of plastics pollution, but the idea of a DRS pre-dates the current wave of public interest in the topic.
