Since the government lost its parliamentary majority in last year’s snap general election, the influence of select committees and backbenchers has grown, BEIS committee chair Rachel Reeves says. Incumbent power is being challenged on all sides, it seems. Reeves is not afraid to defy her party’s whips – most recently over Labour’s original position over the customs union.
