Emissions trading system failings net £75,000 in penalties

Shell UK has paid out more than £40,000 for failing to cover all greenhouse gas emissions from its Fife natural gas liquids plant for three years running.

The firm did not surrender sufficient allowances to cover reportable releases of CO2 under the EU emissions trading scheme (ETS) by the end of April 2013, 2014 and 2015. This breached the site’s greenhouse gas emissions permit, according to the Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA).
