In the drama surrounding the UK government’s negotiating position on its future relationship with the EU, hardline Brexiter Jacob Rees-Mogg has emerged as a powerful figure. Despite not occupying a ministerial position, he wields considerable influence as chair of the European Research Group (ERG) of Eurosceptic MPs. Remain-backing Conservative MP Anna Soubry claimed earlier this month that Rees-Mogg is “running the country”.
