A businessman hired to conduct drainage works on farmland has been fined for dumping inert waste in the Devon countryside.

Roger Baker, of Exeter, imported more than 7,500 tonnes of soil to a field in the nearby village of Poltimore. He held a permitting U1 waste exemption for the works, which permits certain forms of waste to be reused for construction works. However, he grossly exceeded the amount that may be deposited under the exemption, which is only 1,000 tonnes for soil and stones.
