The government has dumped its target to bring half of English sites of special scientific interest (SSSIs) into top condition, according to a document leaked to Greenpeace’s Unearthed investigations unit.

Natural England is too under-funded to do anything more than ensure that 38.7% of SSSIs are in ‘favourable’ condition by 2020, it admits. The goal is only a tiny fraction more than the current figure, risking “further human-induced extinctions of known threatened species”, says the document, Unearthed reports.
