An open letter signed by over 200 academics calls for a judicial review of the prison sentences handed to three fracking protesters on Wednesday, according to The Independent.

The letter warns that the jail terms - of between 15 and 16 months - for stopping a convoy of lorries carrying shale drilling equipment “sets a worrying precedent, curtailing opportunities for the kind of public protests that have historically been effective in instituting the legal and policy changes that defend our environment for our future generations.”
