The chair of the Environmental Audit Committee, Mary Creagh, has written to the chief executives of the UK’s ten leading fashion retailers to find out what steps they are taking to reduce their environmental footprint.
The request for evidence will inform the committee’s inquiry into the sustainability of the fashion industry, investigating how the UK’s £28bn a year fashion industry can reduce its environmental impacts.
The announcement follows revelations in July that Burberry had incinerated some £90m worth of stock in the last five years. At the time, environmental groups said that Burberry’s actions were just the “tip of an iceberg”.
