15 NHS trusts have terminated their contracts with a waste contractor after clinical waste from hospitals was found to have been stockpiled at its sites, the government has announced.

The announcement follows the revelation that  Healthcare Environmental Services (HES), which operates six sites across England, had been found in breach of environmental permits at four sites by keeping more waste than its permits allows and storing it inappropriately. The Environment Agency (EA) is taking enforcement action and launching a criminal investigation.
